There are many benefits to owning a dog, and research shows that dog owners live happier, healthier, and longer lives than those who don't have the benefit of a dog in their life.

The other aspect of dog ownership is exercise, every day you have to walk, and this is very beneficial to the dog and to the person.

We will take a look at FIVE ways that a pet can improve your health.

1. A Healthier Heart.
Studies show that the dog owner has a lower blood pressure than a non-dog owner. Of course, this can be directly attributed to all the walking and ball throwing you do when you get to the park.

Quite often you are traipsing around in the bushes for hours when the ball is lost, and of course, you can't go home without it, so you are probably getting much more exercise than the dog.

The dog has a very calming effect and when you get home from the park, you will probably both fall asleep.

2. Natural Anxiety & Stress Relief

Patting your dog is very soothing, and studies show that being with and patting your dog can actually lower the levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.

Some studies say being with your dog can be more soothing than being with your partner or friend, probably because your dog will sit beside you peacefully for many hours until it is time for them to take you for another walk. Dogs just love to make you happy!.

With all the walking your dog's diet is very important, and like you, they will need his daily multivitamin treat, give it to him in the morning with food.

Older dogs and puppies will also require a probiotic, something we didn't realize the importance of until recently. Probiotics are targeted for certain health benefits, so speak to your Vet about the type required by your dog.

3. Happy Pill

In people suffering from chronic depression pets are of enormous benefit. Just to have a companion constantly with them provides comfort and security that many of these people would not otherwise have.

Dogs are now standard companion pets in Nursing Homes and when the dog comes up to the resident, it is often the only time that they smile all day.

You can tell by observing the older person that the contact with a dog (or cat) evokes memory, and a deeper response in them, reminding them of happier times.

These delicious natural joint chews help to ease pain, stiffness and swelling caused by arthritis, joint and hip problems, without leaving your fur baby feeling drowsy and sluggish.

Hip and joint care are equally important in both the elderly and older dogs, so if you find that your dog is limping or unable to jump consult the vet about treatment/supplements.

Dogs are good company, and having a dog to care for gives an older person a reason to stay active and connected.

4. Social Butterfly

A dog is a much better way to stay connected than a cat (cats tend to be more solitary).

A dog actually has friends and gets invited for playdates and dog birthday parties, this keeps the owner socially connected with people they wouldn't otherwise know, and I have noticed that the dog social scene is nearly as competitive as the children under 10 years birthday parties.

In my city, the dog social scene is alive and well, and we have some excellent off-leash dog parks where owners and dogs can congregate around cafes where they serve Puppuccinos in dishes while the owners have coffee and chat.

Guide Dogs take about two years of training before they can work, and it is similar for the dogs that are trained for PTSD.

Often Labradors are chosen as they are both intelligent and loyal, and seem to be able to learn quite quickly.

Once they are allocated they remain with their new owner all their working life and are then retired to another family, or in cases of PTSD can stay with the person for their life.

It is always very hard for a blind person to retire their dog, as they have become life-long friends, but in order to stay mobile, the blind person will require a new Guide Dog every 10 years.

There is a lot of research being conducted into dogs and the importance of dog intervention in PTSD.

The dogs are trained in calming, and interrupting escalating anxiety in the veterans and these two things were rated most highly by the veterans as being of most benefit to them.

To be able to calm that high level of agitation and anxiety without using medication would be extremely important in allowing the veteran to resume a normal home life, even if still unable to return to work, with their dog by their side.

It also gives these men and women someone else to think about, and care for other than themselves, often a good thing.

Conclusion

Whatever your age or station in life, your dog is your loyal and trusted friend and the bond will remain strong.

We have always had pets, and now we know that we can look after them so much better and keep them healthy with the wonderful products available to keep them with us for as long as possible.

"First time i've tried a probiotic for my dog. Wasn’t sure if they'd work. After a couple days my dog was looking and feeling a lot better. Loose stools all cleared up. I Definitely rate this product"
